Latin America, Mexico or Guatemala, ca. early 20th century CE. A collection of 4 hand carved and painted wooden festival masks, two with a grotesque human visage, one with a lizard, and another with a bird. Wooden masks in Mexico and Guatemala were used in traditional dances and theatrical performances to depict historical and religious narratives. Some festivals include the Dance of the Conquest, which depicts the Spanish conquest of the Americas, and other dances have allusions to nature, drawing on a Pre-Columbian dance tradition and deities. Size of bearded mask: 18.3" L x 7" W (46.5 cm x 17.8 cm)

  • Condition: The mustache face is repainted with newer pigment covering large pressure fissures. Chin on bird mask is repaired with stable break line. Fading and discoloration to pigments on the other masks.
