Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Quimbaya Culture, ca. 9th to 14th century CE; Costa Rica, Greater Nicoya, ca. 300 BCE to 500 CE; West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A group of four hand-built pottery vessels, each representing a distinctive regional tradition of ancient Latin America. The assemblage includes: a Costa Rican Greater Nicoya red-slipped bowl adorned with bold black and red painted geometric bands; a Quimbaya dark gray bowl incised with spiraling triangular motifs; a Quimbaya buff and red pedestal-footed bowl decorated with applied punctate designs and fitted with small lugs along the rim for suspension or attachment of a lid; and a compact Colima burnished redware jar with sharply defined vertical ribs. Size of tallest: 6.75" W x 5.75" H (17.1 cm x 14.6 cm)

Provenance: private Burbank, Illinois, USA collection via inheritance 2024, acquired between 1970s to 2000s

  • Condition: Largest pedestal bowl has a stable fissure radiating from the rim. Incised bowl is repaired and restored from many pieces, with visible break lines and infill with new material. Large polychrome bowl is intact with some root marks on the interior. Smallest pot is intact with some mineral and manganese deposits.
