Description:

Roman Empire, Arrezo, Italy, Arretine, ca 15 BCE to 25 CE. Four bright red, polished terra sigillata-ware fragments. The term terra sigillata literally means clay impressed with designs. These examples were produced in Arretium, or modern day Arezzo, Italy, the original center of terra sigillata production. The body of such wares were typically cast in molds. Relief designs which we see in these examples were also usually cast in molds that were then impressed with stamps to attain the desired figurative scenes and later applied to the vessels. Oftentimes one can find maker's marks on terra sigillata vessels. These can provide an invaluable means to date archaeological objects found in their vecinity. Size: largest measures 5" L x 4" H (12.7 cm x 10.2 cm)
