Braxton Ponder (American, 1915-2001). Five animals. Painted wood sculptures, 1999. All signed B. Ponder on underside of base; 2 with date. A delightful ensemble of five Folk Art painted wood animals by American artist Braxton Ponder, featuring a rabbit, a fox, a panda, a pig, and an ox. Born on a farm in rural Arkansas in 1915, Ponder served in the U.S. Army during World War II. By 1965, he and his wife settled in Nauvoo, Alabama, where they purchased a grocery store. It wasn't until his retirement at age 71 that he took up carving, often incorporating found and discarded objects and packaging materials into his work. This piece exemplifies that approach, with elements such as plastic sheets for ears, wood pegs for horns, and bits of wire and rope for tails. A charming example of American Folk Art! - Condition: All signed B. Ponder on underside of base; 2 with date. Pig missing both ears and fox and rabbit are each missing one ear. Rabbit has had remaining ear reattached with adhesive visible. Some nicks and patina to surface and stable natural fissures to wood. Forms are still clear with good pigments. Please note animal ears are very fragile and may become detached during shipping.
