Description:

East Asia, Korea, Koryo (also Goryeo) Dynasty, ca. 12th to 13th century CE; Joseon Dynasty, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A beautiful gathering of five wheel-thrown pottery vessels covered in lustrous glaze of black, white, light brown, sage green, or dark brown hues. First are two Koryo footed bowls, one with a light green pouring spout, and the other with broad walls and a deep basin. Second are two black glazed Koryo spouted kendi, vessels used to contain holy water collected from sacred rivers. Last is a brown-glazed Joseon bottle with a flared foot, a piriform body, and a dramatically flared rim. Size of largest (Joseon bottle): 3.3" W x 7.8" H (8.4 cm x 19.8 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired between the 1980s and 2000s

  • Condition: Repair to spout and rim of larger kendi as well as rim of brown-glazed bottle, with light adhesive residue along break lines; remaining three vessels are intact and very good. All pieces have minor surface abrasions and light encrustations. Great preservation to glaze coloration throughout.
