Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Highlands Peru, Ancash region, Recuay culture, ca. 200 BCE to 600 CE; Mexico, Veracruz culture, ca. 6th to 8th century CE; West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE; Central America, Costa Rica, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A group of five pottery whistles from various Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican and South American cultures, including a Recuay whistle vessel in the form of a seated monkey with orange slip motifs, a nude Colima figure with prominent phallus, a large bird-shaped whistle, and a Costa Rican burnished brownware whistle featuring twin bird heads. The most intriguing example is a Veracruz zoomorphic head with black bituminous chapapote pigment, its hybrid avian-zoomorphic visage presenting a projecting beak clasping a human hand, large eyes, pointed ears, and perforations for suspension, still functional with a high-pitched tone. Size of largest: 3" W x 4.25" H (7.6 cm x 10.8 cm)
