Jbel Wawrmast Formation, Anti-Atlas Mountain Range, Morocco, Cambrian Period, ca. 516 to 505 million years ago. The giant Paradoxides trilobite is the largest Cambrian trilobite that is found in sedimentary rock beds from this period. They must made quite an intimidating appearance based on their size and design as they roamed the bottom of the ocean floor over a half a billion years ago. These kind of trilobite fossils often fracture when rock is split to locate them. This unavoidable damaging method often leaves missing pieces and highly fragmented specimens so repair and restoration is usually the norm. This example is a very fine quality specimen that far exceeds typical commercial quality examples. It retains a majority of the original trilobite with exceptional preservation and completeness. Original carapace still present on a majority of the body. Approximately only 20% restoration, predominantly on the tips of the pleural spines on the left, both genal spines and free cheeks and the pygidium. A high quality and very appealing specimen for collectors looking for a fine grade example surpassing most commercial types most often encountered. The Paradoxides was the largest Cambrian trilobites and was most likely the terror of the Cambrian oceans in its time. If you want a fine quality example with considerable display appeal, this is an excellent candidate. Size: 13.25" L x 12.5" W (33.7 cm x 31.8 cm).
