Description:

Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 5th to 7th century CE. An intriguing figure of a characteristically minimalist form carved from a bone fragment from a cow, ox, or other ungulate. The figure presents with petite delineated legs below a horizontal waistline, an ovoid body that tapers gently before reaching the attenuated arms and shoulders, and a pair of incised striations that constitute the neckline. The bulbous head features large discoid eyes beneath thin brows and a triangular nose above full lips. Size: 1.125" W x 4" H (2.9 cm x 10.2 cm)

  • Condition: Repaired from two large pieces along upper body near shoulders with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Light abrasions to obverse features and darkening to surface color in some areas. Smooth surface textures and nice patina throughout.
