Egypt, ca. 5th century CE. A beautiful and unusually large Coptic textile depicting a frontal portrait of a woman within a border of large circles; woven in dark purple/brown, red, tan, blue and orange wool. Vibrant and contrasting hues. Framed against textured fabric background with ring on backside for suspension. Size of Coptic textile alone is: 7.5" W x 7.5" H (19 cm x 19 cm). Size of frame: 13.25" W x 13.25" H (33.7 cm x 33.7 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010; ex-private Roudillon collection, Paris, France, acquired in the 1960's; ex-private Henry Kamer collection, Calabasas, California, USA, January 1991
