Description:

Egypt, Coptic Culture, ca. 5th to 8th century CE. A pair of textile fragments made from linen and dyed wool and mounted in a modern wood and glass frame. The loose gauze-like woven square is made from beige linen, and the red wool roundel was likely cut from a larger piece and laid on top in modern times. The rondel is stylized motifs are figures and animals - perhaps a hunting scene. Both pieces may have been from a tunic or funerary shroud - the deceased were clad in their finest clothing with additional textile coverlets and cushions. Textiles such as these have survived the centuries due to the dry climate and burial practices of Coptic Christians. Size of red textile: 3.5" Diameter (8.9 cm); frame: 10.75" L x 11.25" W (27.3 cm x 28.6 cm)

  • Condition: Textiles are ancient and framed in modern times. Tearing and fraying to linen square. Fraying and losses to fibers on rondel and motifs are not clearly discernable. Staining and discoloration to both. The red rondel is mounted with adhesive to the linen square.
