Description:

Egypt, Coptic Culture, ca. 5th to 8th century CE. A large textile panel tightly woven from linen and wool, mounted in a modern wood and glass frame. The beige ground is embellished with dark blue stylized scrolling vine / wave motifs, animals and anthropomorphic beings, and an 8-pointed star medallion. Textiles such as this piece, have survived the centuries due to the dry climate and burial practices of Coptic Christians, the deceased were clad in their finest clothing with additional textile coverlets and cushions. Size of textile: 25.5" L x 8.2" W (64.8 cm x 20.8 cm); frame: 31" L x 12" W (78.7 cm x 30.5 cm)
