Description:

Europe, late Romano-British to late Medieval period, ca. 4th to 15th century CE. A group of six bronze and copper-alloy belt buckles spanning the late Roman, Byzantine, and Medieval periods, illustrating the evolution of personal dress fittings across more than a millennium of European history. The lot includes an 8th century Byzantine buckle, a 14th to 15th century Medieval British example, and a late 6th to late 7th century Byzantine "Syracusan" type buckle, a widely distributed form named for early finds near Syracuse and known from northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Near East. Also included are a 4th to 5th century Romano-British buckle, an Early Medieval buckle from the Netherlands dating to ca. 575 to 625 CE, and a 7th century Langobardic or Frankish example. Size of largest (Syracusan): 3.6" L x 1.8" W (9.1 cm x 4.6 cm)

Together these pieces reflect the diverse regional styles and functional metalwork traditions associated with belts, an essential element of dress that also served as a marker of identity and status throughout the late antique and medieval world.
