Lot 75
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Machalilla culture, ca. 1500 to 1100 BCE; Ecuador, Guangala culture, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE; West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 200 BCE to 400 CE; West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE; Northern Ecuador/Southern Colombia, Carchi culture, ca. 750 to 1500 CE; Costa Rica, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE; West Mexico, Tarascan, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A diverse group of seven Pre-Columbian pottery vessels, each representing a distinct regional tradition across Central and South America. The largest is a globular Guangala jar from coastal Ecuador, burnished to a rich dark surface. The largest bowl is a Nayarit example with a wide open form, while a second large bowl is attributed to the Carchi culture, known for finely polished utilitarian wares. A much smaller bowl comes from Jalisco, West Mexico, its compact form once used in everyday or ritual settings. Size of largest (Guangala jar): 7.6" Diameter x 6.5" H (19.3 cm x 16.5 cm)
The lot also includes a Tarascan spouted jar with ribbed body, a Costa Rican zoomorphic jar modeled as the head of a coatimundi, and a Machalilla culture jar from coastal Ecuador, one of the earliest ceramic traditions in the region. Together these vessels illustrate the remarkable diversity of Pre-Columbian ceramic production, from the earliest Machalilla traditions to later regional styles such as Tarascan and Carchi, all unified by their refined forms, surface treatments, and cultural significance.
The largest bowl has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis by Kotalla Laboratories and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany the item upon purchase.
