Description:

Egypt, Coptic (Christian Egypt), Late Antiquity, ca. 7th to 10th century CE. A pair of finely woven textile fragments made from wool and linen, likely tunic decorations known as clavi, in vibrant polychrome hues against a rich red ground. These decorative bands blend both Christian and lingering pagan motifs - a syncretism typical of Late Antique Egyptian art. Both feature a nimbate figure, possibly a saint, apostle, or evangelist, rendered with stylized facial features, below are scrolling plants, beasts, and cherubic figures. Such iconographic mixing reflects the transitional cultural environment of early Christian Egypt, where Greco-Roman visual traditions gradually merged with emerging Christian iconography. These fragments likely once adorned the vertical bands of a Coptic tunic, serving both decorative and symbolic purposes. Size: 11.5" L x 1.8" W (29.2 cm x 4.6 cm)
