Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A matching set of 8 Chinese marble folding screens in dark hardwood frameworks, each leaf divided into rectangular reserves holding white marble panels hand-painted with lively figural scenes and framed calligraphic texts. The painted vignettes depict courtly gatherings, gardens, pavilions, and landscape passages, while the upper registers carry poems or couplets in flowing brushwork that lend the set a literati character. End pieces are distinguished by openwork scroll carvings into the wood. Metal bar hinges run along the vertical edges of each panel, allowing the leaves to link and fold into a freestanding screen, however they have not been tested for freestanding capability. A substantial decorative ensemble suited for room division or as a wall-spanning display with strong Chinese pictorial and poetic resonance. Size: 11.5" L x 1" W x 70" H (29.2 cm x 2.5 cm x 177.8 cm)
