Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. 17th to 19th century CE. A collection of 8 silver, brass, bronze, and copper items: coins, milagros, and a bronze axle cap for a wagon wheel. The milagros consist of a 91% silver heart milagro with a suspension piercing, and a brass milagro with a sword through the heart. The coins consist of two hammered copper squares with faint impressions, a 91.9% silver coin cut in half, and a 95.2% and 95.7% silver flattened and nearly smooth discs - one with a suspension hole and faint bust from the original currency. Size (bronze axle cap): 2.3" L x 0.8" W (5.8 cm x 2 cm); (case): 6.25" L x 5.25" W (15.9 cm x 13.3 cm); silver quality: 91.2% to 95.7%; total weight: 4.1 grams

Provenance: private Kansas, USA collection, acquired via descent from family in Jalisco, Mexico ca. the 1940s, and imported into the US in the 1970s and 1980s

  • Condition: Bronze axle cap has old losses to wide and narrow ends. Mineral and earthen deposits in recessed areas. Coins are rubbed and soft, no clear or discernable markings on any. Heart Milagro is intact and very good. Sword Milagro has loss to heart area. Patina and toning throughout. Coins and milagro displayed in Riker case.
