Description:

Western Europe, Medieval Period, ca. 9th to 12th century CE. A fabulous pair of matched iron stirrups, both comprised of a rectangular foot plate that curves upward to a ridged arch. An integral and rectangular suspension loop is positioned at the top for securing these stirrups to a strap on a saddle. A rich layer of a dark patina coats the surface of both. Stirrups stabilized riders and gave them more balance, helping them remain in the saddle while riding. Size: 4.5" W x 7.5" H (11.4 cm x 19 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
