Description:

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A choice ring of wearable form that was created from a single hammered sheet of gold that still exhibits much of its original luster. The band is wider in the center than on the knotted terminals, and displayed across the topside is a series of expertly stamped triangular patterns that were a preferred style in ancient times. Many Vikings did not have a standard minted currency available to them, and so instead kept their wealth in the form of jewelry made from precious metals. A common practice seems to have been to amass a hoard of these objects and then deposit them, often in water sources like rivers. Gold rings - like all gold objects - were rare and are only found in graves of the highest status. Size: 0.39" L x 0.82" W x 0.89" H (1 cm x 2.1 cm x 2.3 cm); gold quality: 84.28% (equivalent to 20K+); weight: 7.7 grams; US ring size: 8
