Description:

Ancient Greece, Corinth, Korinthos, ca. 575 to 550 BCE. Two Corinthian aryballoi of a classic form comprised of a spherical body, rounded bottom, and a thick vertical handle joining the body to the disc-like lip, used to hold precious scented oils for the bath. Both are glazed with the quatrefoil design with interstices and petals - to my eye also presenting avian elements including four wings (hence the term quatrefoil) on the side wall and tailfeather-like forms on the underside. The flattened rims surrounding the mouths are also decorated with petal or wing-like motifs. Such vessels were skillfully thrown, fired, and glazed. The larger example shows a purplish hued glaze, the smaller a more coppery russet hue, both against a buff beige ground. For a similar example, see Wisseman, Sarah U. Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum. Philipp von Zabern: Mainz, 1989. Page 7-8, Plate 5, 7. Size: largest measures 3.125" W x 3.125" H (7.9 cm x 7.9 cm)
