Five collectible Christmas spoons from Anton Michelsen of Denmark of vermeil silver and enamel, and a single sterling silver spoon from Norway by Magnus Aase- 6 spoons total. The short blue enamel handle spoon is marked "925 S STERLING" with the Magnus Aase emblem and "Norway." All of the A. Michelsen spoons are hallmarked with Jul (Yule) the year, and additional artist marks. "The Wise Men of the East" (stylized figures and star) 1958, "KGH" Karl Gustav Hansen. "Flight into Egypt" (Mary on donkey) 1966, "JD" Jorgen Dahlerup. "Herald" (abstract angel face with wings) 1972 signed Bjorn Wiinblad. "Splendor of Yule" (yellow fir tree and star) 1967, "Paul Rene Gauguin". The Anton Michelsen Christmas spoon has a rich history rooted in Danish tradition. Anton Michelsen, a renowned Danish silversmith, began the tradition of Christmas spoons in 1910. These spoons are a part of a series known as the "Michelsen Christmas Spoons" or "Anton Michelsen Annual Spoons." Each year, A. Michelsen would commission a different often famous artist to design a new Christmas spoon, often featuring motifs related to Christmas or Danish culture. The spoons were typically made of sterling silver and sometimes gold-plated (vermeil). The unique and often beautiful designs were highly anticipated by collectors, and they were released as limited editions. The casting tools were allegedly destroyed after each season to ensure they were not recreated surreptitiously. In 1988, the production of the Christmas spoons was transferred to Georg Jensen, another prestigious Danish silversmith. The tradition continued under the new name, and Georg Jensen continued to release annual Christmas spoons. These earlier Anton Michelsen Christmas spoons have become cherished items for collectors worldwide.
