Lot 133
Pre-Columbian, Huari (Wari) Culture, Peru south coast, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. This is an absolutely masterful, adorable large polychrome vessel of a river otter. He has a lively face tilted upwards, with a detailed mouth showing teeth, nostrils, and whiskers. There is a spout on the opposite side of the otter head. The Huari people would have hunted mammals like seals and otters in the cold waters of the Pacific Oceanl this carving suggests that they were astute observers of the natural world, as here the artist has captured the playful pose and nature of the otter. Size: 11" L x 5" H (27.9 cm x 12.7 cm).
