First Nations, Canada, Inuit, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A superb and charming soapstone carving of a narwhal- the iconic corkscrew tusk carved from whale bone and set into the nose. These whales are an important part of indigenous arctic culture - prized for their skin, meat, bones, and tusks, also playing a role in human transformation legends. The underside is signed with the artist's name and disc number "E7.924" - the name might be "Anete To" or "Aneteto" depending on the spacing between the letters. Size: 13" L x 5.5" W x 3" H (33 cm x 14 cm x 7.6 cm)
