West Africa, Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire), Baule culture, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A carved wooden slingshot handle, known locally as a potomo waka, shaped into a stylized anthropomorphic figure. The figure stands with legs splayed in a V-formation, forming the forks for the sling mechanism, while the upper body and head are rendered with minimalist features. The reverse side includes a carved face or head - possibly representing an ancestor or spiritual entity. Slingshots were traditionally used for hunting small game and the carved figures and motifs were not merely decorative but were believed to represent spirits or ancestors, offering protection and guidance to the hunter. Size: 9.25" L x 3.5" W (23.5 cm x 8.9 cm); 10.25" H (26 cm) on included custom stand.
