Description:

**First Time At Auction**

West Africa, Ivory Coast, Baule, ca. mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved and hand-painted wooden mask depicting a human face with elegantly delineated features - slit eyes (slightly open), painted black brows, a long slender nose, slightly open lips revealing carved teeth, and tiny ears - all upon a ruby red painted face and framed by a lobed fringe of bangs with incised locks. The bite stick has survived and remains on the inside; this is how the dancer kept the mask in front of his face. This mask, also known as a Goli Glin type, is associated with the Goli festival which dates back to around 1900 and was created to celebrate new crops, periods of mourning, or visits from dignitaries. Size: 8.25" H (21 cm); 13.125" H (33.3 cm) on included custom stand.
