Description:

Africa, Bura-Asinda-Sikka, modern-day Niger, ca. 2nd to 11th century CE. This is the top of a head from a terracotta statue that, when intact, would most likely have been just a head atop a long, thin neck. The eyes are coffee-bean shaped and there is a pronounced nose in addition to prominent lines at the corners of the eyes and down the forehead; those lines are thought to be evidence of scarification. The terracotta heads from this archaeological site were planted in the ground above human remains and grave goods. Each of the heads has distinct features and probably represent a deceased individual. Comes with custom stand. Size: 3.6" W x 3.5" H (9.1 cm x 8.9 cm).
