Lot 100C
Africa, Nigeria, Sokoto, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A terracotta head fragment from a larger figure with a solemn expression and traits characteristic of the Sokoto culture including heavy brows, downturned thick lidded eyes, a jutting pointy chin, full lips, and an elaborately modeled coiffure. Very little is known about the Sokoto culture which existed between 500 BCE and 200 CE and was first discovered in the 1990s; however, terracotta sculptures of the Sokoto culture show overlaps with the ancient Nok and Katsina cultures of Nigeria. Reconstructions suggest that they possessed a cone-shaped body which one may infer to have phallic associations. A wonderful example that presents an ethereal countenance. Custom, museum-quality stand. Size: head itself measures 5.75" L x 4.25" W x 8.25" H (14.6 cm x 10.8 cm x 21 cm); 10.75" H (27.3 cm) on stand
