West Africa, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire, Dan peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A skillfully hand-carved wood staff in the form of a beautiful female shown nude with an elongated, ribbed neck and a serene countenance. Crowned by a coiffure of cornrows, the figure holds her arms to either side of her tubular midsection, which presents a pronounced navel, perky breasts, and incised areas of ceremonial scarification. The lower part of the staff is decoratively sculpted in an abstract form, with tiered and twisted motifs. Size: 3.6" W x 33.8" H (9.1 cm x 85.9 cm); 34" H (86.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

  • Condition: Chipping to nose and coiffure. A few stable fissures, though mostly hairline and barely noticeable unless closely examined. Perforation near bottom of staff and possible repair to neck. Some areas of light surface wear. Otherwise, excellent with nice patina.
