Central Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Luba peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved lupona stool comprised of a kneeling nude woman holding a slightly concave seat above her head. The brown-painted woman has pendulous breasts, incised abdominal cicatrices, and legs bent beside her thighs. Her ovoid face features almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, full lips, and a rounded brow, all in front of a massive conical coiffure. This woman figure represented fertility and her use as a lupona stool literally and symbolically shows her support of the person seated upon it. Size: 6.5" W x 10.75" H (16.5 cm x 27.3 cm)
