Description:

African, Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luba culture, 20th century. This mbira (finger harp) is a wonderful example of Luba artistry. The Luba artisans traditionally have created works to honor the royal court. This finger harp was created in the form of a figure with a finely carved head and expressive face. Musical instruments like these were intended for use in ceremonial rituals involving dance or storytelling. Beautiful technique is exhibited in this piece carved from fine grained wood with metal keys. 9-1/2"L x 4-1/2"W x 2-1/2"D
