West Africa, Nigeria, Ibibio culture, ca. late 20th century CE. A hand-carved oval wood mask with circular features, black painted with white and red accents. Rattan strips are tied to the rim for securing to a larger costume or raffia fringe. The Ibibio reside in small village groups and maintain social peace and order through the use of mask and figures that symbolize good and evil spirits. Size: 10" L x 7.5" W x 13" H (25.4 cm x 19 cm x 33 cm); 21.5" H (54.6 cm) on included custom stand.
