Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, mid to late 20th century CE. A large wooden tray for serving food with a lid. Carved atop the lid (as one piece of wood) are twin turtles and a crocodile with a large grin. The exterior of the vessel is painted a deep blue, giving the impression that the animals are resting in a shallow body of water. The interior of the vessel is divided into a central compartment with two other compartments around it, for holding different kinds of food. Size: 12" W x 9.3" H (30.5 cm x 23.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
