North America, United States, ca. 19th to early-20th century CE; Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Punuk / Thule to Inuit cultures, ca. 1000 to 1800s CE. An intriguing group of 17 marine mammal pieces, the lot includes two large whale teeth, alongside various carved walrus ivory and bone implements by both Indigenous Alaskan makers and American sailors. Of note is a small folding travel tool, with dual ivory picks possibly used for dental or nail care. Another highlight is a charming ink eraser knife with an iron nib blade, set into a carved ivory handle in the form of a hand, inscribed with the date "JAN 2" and initials "LAW." The largest item is a conical walrus ivory piece, hollowed at the root and drilled near the neck, possibly a handle or shaft fitting. Other items include bone panels, fishhooks, and awls, offering a diverse glimpse into both Arctic lifeways and maritime folk art traditions. Size of largest: 7.25" L x 1" W (18.4 cm x 2.5 cm)

  • Condition: Large losses to the enamel on the whale teeth. Missing some picks attached to the folding tool. Ink discoloration to eraser knife. Various chips and wear through out as expected with age and use. Dark patina and toning to Inuit items likely due to exposure to elements with natural pitting and ossification to bone.
