Native American, Pacific Northwest, southeastern Alaska, Tlingit people, ca. early 20th century CE. A skirt made from hundreds of strands of twisted, woven rope, with dozens of deer hooves and seashells tied onto the ends of the ropes. Native Americans across the temperate zones of North America use deer hoof rattles for a variety of purposes - in ceremonial dances, as part of traditional medicine, to speak with nature, and in initiation rites. Women wore skirts like this one in warmer months, often with an apron over it. Size: 45.5" W x 30" H (115.6 cm x 76.2 cm); 31" H (78.7 cm) on included custom stand.
