Description:

Allan Reid (American, b. 1949). "Music Lessons" pen and ink on paper, 1971. Signed with year at lower right. A whimsical pen and ink drawing by Allan Reid titled "Music Lessons" depicting a fantastical musical troupe seated amongst the meandering boughs of a tree. Comprised of a violinist, a banjo player, a saxophonist, a flutist, and a horn player, the quintet is led by a crooked-nosed conductor and key-keeper who sits right, grasping a music book and baton while seemingly singing along to the mischievous melody. The tree, though appearing dead or dormant with leafless branches that twist tormentedly outward, is in fact bursting with life in the form of knotted faces that protrude from gnarls of bark and burls of wood across the monstrous arboreal structure. Beneath all is a petite door carved into the trunk of the tree above which is inscribed "Music Lessons." Size of image: 25.25" W x 22.25" H (64.1 cm x 56.5 cm); of paper: : 29" W x 23" H (73.7 cm x 58.4 cm); of matte: 33.5" W x 35.75" H (85.1 cm x 90.8 cm)

Educated at the Pratt Institute, Reid created the 1969 poster of the Janis Joplin concert at the University of Michigan Events Building in Ann Arbor, Michigan in March of that year. Remaining an Ann Arbor based artist for the majority of his career, Reid's works are prized for their playful Surrealism and fine point precision with frequent comparisons to the mathematical renderings of M. C. Escher.
