South America, Brazil, / Amazon Basin, likely Indigenous Arawakan / Maiourean people, ca. 20th century CE. An intriguing balsawood carving comprised of 3 pieces - 2 serrated wing-like sides and a curved ovoid panel with a fish surmounted to the edge. The surface is covered in a white pigment and black meandering lines with stippling and the verso contains hide cords for suspension or wearing. Perhaps this was a ritualistic mask / headdress or shield for a ceremony. Size: 31" L x 11" W (78.7 cm x 27.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
