Description:

East Africa, Madagascar, Jurassic to Cretaceous period, ca. 200 to 66 million years ago. A fully excavated, fossilized ammonite displaying intricate ammonitic suture patterns across a polished surface. The outer shell layer has been carefully removed on one side to expose the interior chambers, some of which remain open and lined with delicate brown crystal formations. Around the chamber aperture, the preparer has skillfully carved to accentuate the natural sutures, creating a sculptural profile that captures both aesthetic and structural complexity. The reverse side has been polished to a high gloss, highlighting the fractal-like geometry of the sutures - typically hidden beneath the external shell. These complex ammonitic sutures are diagnostic of Jurassic and Cretaceous ammonoids and have been linked to enhanced buoyancy regulation and shell strength. Size: 5" Diameter x 1" W (12.7 cm x 2.5 cm); 7" H (17.8 cm) on included custom stand.
