Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Late Cretaceous period., ca. 100,000,000 - 66,000,000 BCE. A large ammonite fossil preserved atop a dense bed of calcified marine brachiopod shells, with the ammonite partially enveloped by the original carbonate seafloor deposit. The shell displays protruding nodes along the outer whorl and ribbing across the surface, features consistent with ammonites of the genus Mammites. The specimen has been carefully excavated to reveal the ammonite while retaining much of the surrounding fossil-bearing sediment, which has been shaped to form a stable and natural base. The result is a cohesive fossil composition that preserves both the primary organism and a portion of its original marine environment. Size of matrix: 8" L x 2.5" W x 10.5" H (20.3 cm x 6.4 cm x 26.7 cm); ammonite: 6" L x 6" W x 10.5" H (15.2 cm x 15.2 cm x 26.7 cm)

Provenance: private Berthoud, Colorado, USA collection
