Description:

Mexico, ca. 1800-1900. A colorful antique Mexican retablo depicting the Holy Mother and Baby Jesus. Icons like these were placed above household altars to venerate the saints (retablo literally means "behind the altar"). The retablo became wildly popular in the 19th century due to the introduction of tin as an affordable medium. This example is vividly painted with blues, pinks, and golds. The Child stands on a bed of clouds, while his Mother steadies him gently. He is naked save a cloth draped around his nether region. The Queen of Heaven wears a magnificent cloak bearing images related to her life over a brilliant red frock. An elegant necklace and earring grace her throat and visible ear. Her curls are topped with a dainty crown, and the Pair are surrounded by a garland of roses. 9 1/2" x 7" Provenance: ex-Kelley collection, Colorado All items in this auction have been legally acquired, are legal to sell, and guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
