Description:

Native American, American Southwest, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), ca. 12th to 14th century CE. A Native American Ancestral Puebloan black-on-white compound jar, this unusual vessel is formed with a pronounced ridge at mid-body, creating the impression of a bowl fused to a smaller jar rising from its center. The shape is sculptural and highly intentional, with a rounded lower chamber, a sharply defined medial band, and a short, flaring neck above. The exterior is decorated in mineral-painted black-on-white, with bold geometric banding that wraps the upper body in crisp, rhythmic patterns. Spirals, stepped motifs, and interlocking linear elements create a strong sense of movement, while a dotted border along the ridge visually emphasizes the join between the two sections. The design is balanced and graphic, typical of the sophisticated Puebloan ceramic tradition of the late prehistoric Southwest. Size: 5" W x 3.9" H (12.7 cm x 9.9 cm)

Compound forms like this demonstrate the inventive range of Ancestral Puebloan potters, who often pushed beyond simple utility to explore complex profiles and striking surface design. Whether used for storage, serving, or display, this jar would have been an object of both function and visual authority, its architecture-like silhouette making it a standout within any grouping.
