Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Anasazi Peoples, New Mexico, Mimbres / Mogollon., ca. 950 - 1150 CE. A rare ceramic bowl featuring a painted interior design of a stylized fish, its body filled with a checkered pattern and framed by bold concentric bands. The surrounding field is encircled by a lattice of cross-hatched lines and alternating filled and unfilled squares. A circular kill hole pierces the center of the vessel, a ritual feature often associated with funerary use and the ceremonial "release" of the vessel's spirit. The hemispherical exterior is unadorned. Research has suggested that Mimbres pictorial imagery of unusually shaped or stylized fish may reflect knowledge of exotic marine species, indicating long-distance travel or trade connections reaching as far as the Gulf of California, where such forms could have inspired these distinctive representations. Size: 8" W x 3.5" H (20.3 cm x 8.9 cm)

This item has been TL (Thermoluminescence) and XRF (X-ray florescence) tested and is shown to be ancient as described with no evidence of modern pigment.
