Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, east central Arizona, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), ca. 1275 to 1325 CE. A beautiful pottery bowl with a rounded base, tall walls, a deep basin, and a thin rim. The smoothed white surfaces are decorated with concentric zigzagging lines and tight spirals in jet-black pigment which conjures visions of the lightning storms that mark the skies of the desert southwest during the rainy season. Interestingly, this decoration covers almost the entire interior of the bowl - most examples from this culture leave more of the white visible. Size: 6.3" W x 3.45" H (16 cm x 8.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, bought in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum, 1962-1970; ex-Bill Mitchell collection, Cortez, Colorado, USA, from 1958-1962
