Description:

Native American, Southwestern USA, found near the San Juan River in New Mexico, Anasazi/Ancestral Puebloans, ca. 1100 to 1300 CE. A black-on-white ceramic pitcher with a cross-hatched diamond motif around its narrow neck, a bulbous lower body, and a thick strap handle painted with a design pattern comprised of repeated diamonds that resemble cross-hatching. Archaeologists believe that cross-hatching in Anasazi art may represent the color turquoise, symbolizing both the stone and water. Size: 4.9" W x 5.5" H (12.4 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, bought in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum, 1962-1970; ex-Bill Mitchell collection, Cortez, Colorado, USA, from 1958-1962
