Description:

Native American, Southwestern USA, Ancestral Pueblo/Anasazi culture, ca. 900 to 1350 CE. A graceful ceramic seed jar, made using the coil and scrape method, with a narrow, round opening at its top center and a tapering, rounded body with a flat foot. The surface is white with remains of black pigment around the upper body. Seed jars were originally made to protect seeds from pests and extreme temperature fluctuations. Many of these jars were broken when their owners needed to extract the seeds, as this one probably was! Size: 6.25" W x 3.75" H (15.9 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, bought in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum, 1962-1970; ex-Bill Mitchell collection, Cortez, Colorado, USA, from 1958-1962
