Description:

Native American, southwest New Mexico, villages in Southern Cibola Anasazi / Northern Mogollon, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) culture, ca. 1150 to 1300 CE. A lovely, hand-built pottery ladle presenting a thick, tubular handle with a concave verso and a large scooping bowl with a thin rim. Slipped with a pearly white surface, the fine implement is finely painted black decoration consisting of a central floral motif resembling a quatrefoil surrounded by a lattice pattern on the bowl and a spiraling triangular design along the handle. Made for stirring and serving food, this example was probably ultimately deposited with a deceased member of the community or left in an abandoned domestic space. Size: 8.1" L x 4" W x 2" H (20.6 cm x 10.2 cm x 5.1 cm); 8.5" H (21.6 cm) on included custom stand.

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

  • Condition: TL holes to inside handle and base of bowl. Repaired from 5 large original pieces with light restoration over the break lines. Some expected surface wear with light abrasions and a few minor nicks. Otherwise, excellent with impressive remaining pigments.
