Description:

Near East, Assyrian Empire, ca. 800 to 600 BCE. A rare black steatite stamp seal carved in the form of a hedgehog, pierced laterally through the thickest part for suspension and modeled with a cross-hatched body pattern that contrasts with the smoother head. The flat seal face is engraved with a standing worshipper in a long robe, raising one hand, with a long plait of hair projecting backward. The scene is enriched with symbolic elements including a tree behind the figure, a dot, crescent, and star above, and a vessel set on a stand with a rhomb motif. Accompanying the piece is an original typewritten description signed in blue ink by Professor Wilfred George Lambert (1926-2011), the noted Assyriologist and Fellow of the British Academy. The surface shows minor encrustation consistent with age, while the carving remains clear and well preserved overall. Size: 1" L x 0.5" W x 0.7" H (2.5 cm x 1.3 cm x 1.8 cm)

Provenance: private London, UK collection acquired on the London art market; ex-private collection of D. Ruskin, Oxford, England, 1990s
