Description:

Pre-Columbian, Lower Amazon Basin, Marajo Island, Brazil, ca. 400 to 1350 CE. A lovely hand-built ceramic dish decorated in a buff colored slip over an intricate, incised geometric design on both the interior and the underside, a thick, rounded rim indented on opposite sides, and twin handles in the form of zoomorphic heads. Such dishes were used for ceremonial offering, and the overall shape of the vessel suggests a turtle form. The elaborate decorative program of finely incised geometric motifs akin to a labyrinth pattern, which occur exclusively on Marajoara ceremonial vessels, designate this as a particularly special dish. Size: 12.25" L x 9.75" W x 3.125" H (31.1 cm x 24.8 cm x 7.9 cm)
