Description:

Central / Northern Europe, Celtic Iron Age, ca. 2nd century BCE to 1st century CE. A forged iron horse bit formed with long hook-ended cheek pieces. One plain bar crosses between the cheek pieces, and below are iron discs on two linked arms. These discs still rotate and were intended for the horse to run its tongue over as a calming method. A heavy patina covers this piece. Celtic horse bits were not solely tools, made to sit between the animal's teeth and guide it via reins running from its back to a cart or chariot. They were also treasured objects, since the ownership of horses was reserved for the wealthy and elite. Size: 8" L x 4.75" W (20.3 cm x 12.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
