Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A charming pottery modeled horse rendered in a stylized pose with a dramatically arched neck and flared nostrils. The surface is cold painted with traces of scrolling decoration and the bridle in red, brown, and white pigments. The head, rump, and limbs exhibit drilled tenon holes, once used to secure separately carved wooden ears, tail, and legs, now lost with time. Such figures would have originally been placed in tombs as mingqi, or "spirit objects," to accompany the deceased in the afterlife, reflecting the importance of horses in Han society. Size: 12" L x 4.25" W x 9.75" H (30.5 cm x 10.8 cm x 24.8 cm); 10.25" H (26 cm) on included custom stand.
