Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A mold-made pottery horse mingqi head displaying a lively visage with bulging eyes, pronounced musculature along the snout, flared nostrils, and an open mouth. The surface was painted after firing with a combination of mineral pigments, with good remains of white and traces of red in the recessed mouth areas. Such heads were often made separately and mounted atop the rest of the prancing body. Comes with a removable wooden display base. Mingqi, or "spirit utensils," were burial objects meant to accompany the deceased. During this period, the most prized Ferghana horses from Central Asia were symbols of status, strength, and supernatural power. Elite burials often included pottery "celestial horses" modeled after these revered steeds to carry the deceased in the afterlife. Size: 6" L x 2" W x 6.5" H (15.2 cm x 5.1 cm x 16.5 cm); 8.3" H (21.1 cm) on included custom stand.
