Description:

China, Neolithic to Early Western Zhou Period, ca. 2500–1000 BCE. A rare and visually compelling quadruple bi disc pendant, expertly carved from a single piece of semi-translucent brown hard stone (measures close in hardness and composition to jade) with soft variegation and light calcification. The form is composed of four stacked bi-shaped segments, each meticulously drilled with a central aperture and smoothly polished to a lustrous finish. Shallow notching along the edges between each disc subtly defines their separation while maintaining a unified vertical profile. This form belongs to a class of jade objects often associated with ritual, cosmology, and elite identity in early Chinese cultures. The bi disc, in singular form, symbolized heaven or the celestial realm; here, the repetition of four units may amplify its symbolic power or reference directional/spiritual quadrants, echoing Neolithic cosmological models. Size: 4.75" W x 14.25" H (12.1 cm x 36.2 cm); 17.25" H (43.8 cm) on included custom stand.
